Learning Environment
Culture- Pre-K is a combination of academic objectives as well as personal and social skills. One of our goals in Pre-K is to create a safe, learning environment for our students by teaching them the importance of respecting others. Another goal is that students perform many self-care activities independently. The structure of the classroom is student-centered in that much of the day is based on the students exploring items on their own or with a group of peers to build knowledge. They use their creativity and prior knowledge of what they have seen and heard people do with materials to pretend/act out scenes when learning. What many people consider as play is considered as important learning moments for our students. There are activities throughout the day in which the teacher initiates activities such as small group and large group literacy activities. We sit in a circle on the carpet for many of our large group sessions. This time is when the teacher focuses on phonological awareness as well as tying in many science and social studies concepts.
Physical Space-There are 9 centers in my classroom and also a sensory table. The centers include Blocks, Home Living, Science, Math, Reading, Writing, Art, Music, and a Listening Center. I do not have a desk. I keep my materials on a shelf and a file cabinet towards the front of the room. There is a large carpet in front of the promethean board which is seen upon entering the room. The blocks shelves are set up around one corner of this carpet. There are also 2 doors at the back of the room that lead to student restrooms.
